A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that occurs when a sudden impact, jolt, or blow causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. This movement can lead to chemical changes in the brain and, in some cases, damage brain cells. While concussions are often labeled as "mild," their effects can be anything but—ranging from temporary symptoms to long-term cognitive, emotional, and physical challenges.

In 2024, Healing with Hyperbarics launched its first-ever Athlete Ambassador Program, a unique initiative designed to educate, connect, and empower local athletes – plus learn a little more about concussion treatment and other benefits of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. Seven athletes from diverse sports and schools came together to learn, grow, and experience the healing potential of HBO therapy firsthand.

As we reflect on 2024, we’re proud to share the impact Healing with Hyperbarics has made in our community. From helping patients recover from concussions to supporting veterans and empowering local athletes, it’s been a year filled with milestones, growth, and hope. Every session represents a step toward healing, and every story reflects the power of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

At Healing with Hyperbarics, our mission is to empower athletes on and off the field, fostering leadership, resilience, and peak performance. Our Athlete Ambassador Program was inspired by a dual mission: to raise awareness about the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for athletes and to foster a community where athletes can connect beyond their respective schools.

Recent research is showing that an increasing number of concussion patients aren't recovering from their symptoms with rest alone, as we once thought. Now, the key question is: what risk factors contribute to prolonged concussion recovery, and what are the most effective concussion treatments?

Numerous studies have shown that hyperbaric oxygen can improve the symptoms now categorized as “post-COVID longhauler” or “long COVID”.

When we participate in school and work, it requires mental energy. We expend energy that should be used for recover, on tasks. This does not help the healing process. Therefore, we recommend limited school and work until symptom-free.

The rate of concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs), is rising. Our knowledge of long-lasting concussion-related problems, including PCS (post-concussion syndrome) and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is growing. Below we explore the current concussion approach, if concussions are truly getting better with this approach and how we are changing the status quo.
