Risk Factors for Prolonged Concussion Recovery (Fargo, ND)

A history of (untreated) concussions, like those sustained during contact sports, is the number one risk factor for prolonged concussion recovery.

Recent research is showing that an increasing number of concussion patients aren't recovering from their symptoms with rest alone as we once thought. Now, the key question is: what risk factors contribute to prolonged concussion recovery, and what are the most effective concussion treatments?

Key Risk Factors for Prolonged Concussion Recovery

1. History of Previous (Untreated) Concussion

Studies, like one conducted on collegiate football players, indicate that individuals with a history of previous concussions are at higher risk for prolonged recovery. The research showed that those with prior concussions had recovery periods lasting longer than seven days.

2. Memory Loss (Amnesia)

Memory loss, or amnesia, can further be broken down into two categories with respect to post-concussion symptoms: retrograde (forgetting events prior to the concussion) or anterograde (difficulty forming new memories). Both types are associated with prolonged concussion recovery times and, because amnesia diagnoses may not be known, even general memory loss can be an indicator of extended recovery, according to research.

3. Previous Mental Health Diagnoses

Individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, or disordered eating, often experience prolonged concussion recovery, as this study illustrated. These individuals may also suffer from heightened emotional symptoms post-injury, such as increased irritability, numbness, or heightened emotions.

4. Migraines

Though not as strongly linked as other factors, a history of migraines has been associated with prolonged concussion recovery in some studies. While the connection isn't definitive, it remains an important factor to monitor.

5. Gender (Women)

For many reasons, much unknown, women may face a higher risk of prolonged concussion recovery than men. Studies suggest that cognitive symptom burden and possibly female hormones play a role in this prolonged recovery time.
